Here’s our pick of the moments that helped make E! the true “pop of culture” in Africa.

With E! Entertainment on DStv (124) celebrating its 15th anniversary in Africa, here are 15 things over the years that helped make E! the true “pop of culture”.

  1. Lebo Mathosa

The year was 2004, Lebo Mathosa had just released her sophomore album Drama Queen and there was nobody hotter on the South African pop culture and music scene than the blonde-haired “Madonna of the Townships”. No-one else could have been the artist to perform at E!’s VIP-only celebratory launch party event held at Taboo to mark the channel’s launch in Africa!

  1. Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Their collective surname means reality royalty. But they’re so super famous that you can just say Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, Kylie or Kendall and everyone knows exactly who you’re talking about. Who could forget when Kim and Khloé visited South Africa in 2010? Together with “momager” Kris, Scott Disick and a bevvy of must-watch characters, the Kardashians are 16 seasons in and, with several spin-off series along the way, they’re the special K reality TV-diet viewers simply never tire of.

  1. The girls

Even before the Kardashians, E! did ground-breaking work in bringing viewers addictive reality series following the must-watch trials and tribulations of women making and finding their way in the world. The Gastineau Girls followed the New York mom-and-daughter socialites Lisa and Brittny Gastineau, and then came Girls of the Playboy Mansion, also known as The Girls Next Door, which led to two spin-off E! reality series – Holly’s World and Kendra.

  1. E! Live from the Red Carpet

It’s not a Hollywood awards show without E!’s legendary Live from the Red Carpet coverage, interviewing and showing the arrival of the stars at the biggest events on the annual entertainment calendar, from the Oscars and the Golden Globes to the Emmys, Grammys and everything in-between. From the roving reporters to the Glamcam 360, you haven’t seen the celebs and the fashions if you haven’t seen it on E!.

  1. E!’s Fashion Police

The iconic Joan Rivers, who coined the phrase “Who you wearing?”, and started the industry-leading style of red carpet interviews with E! went on to create and become The Fashion Police. Unflinching and very funny, everybody turned to Joan to get her true take on celebrities’ red carpet couture.

  1. Kat Sinivasan

Africa’s E! correspondent and the co-host of How Do I Look? SA has been rubbing shoulders with Hollywood and Africa’s A-listers ever since he won E! Africa’s presenter search in 2017 in the special reality series, The Search: E! Host South Africa. Kat has gone on to visit E! headquarters in LA and do red carpet coverage from Hollywood events.

  1. Africa E! News Specials

In 2015, the most influential South African celebrity, Bonang Matheba, became the first African celebrity to feature in a special profile on E!. Not only did Bonang also visit E! headquarters, she went on to become the presenter of the Africa E! News Special profile series, featuring Africa’s biggest artists and celebrities.

  1. Celebrity Game Night

Production will start this July on Celebrity Game Night, E!’s latest local show for South Africa and Africa. The show will see a host put two teams of celebrities through their paces to face-off against each other as they play hilarious and outrageous party games that will test their pop culture knowledge, acting skills and nerves.

  1. Local red carpet coverage

E! went red carpet local in 2016 and has been our go-to for red carpet specials from the Saftas to the Samas ever since, with local hosts like Bonang, Maps Maponyane, Katlego Maboe and Minnie Dlamini.

  1. E! True Hollywood Story

The biographical documentary series that now spans over 500 episodes is the definitive behind-the-scenes insider story about Hollywood’s celebrities, artists, shows, films and issues. Every episode of this long-running and extremely thorough series tells the complete story of what really happened with and to the biggest names and brands in entertainment, with interviews, clips and rare insider details and revelations.

  1. The Anna Nicole Show

“Anna, Anna, glamorous Anna, Anna Nicole!” Before her untimely death in 2007, former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith created a must-see sensation with her own E! reality show. Do you remember Anna and her miniature poodle, Sugar Pie? Or her feuds with her flamboyant interior decorator, Bobby Trendy, her long-suffering attorney Howard K. Stern, and poor assistant Kimmie? You simply couldn’t look away.

After more than 7500 episodes, the daily E! News still reigns as the day’s definite report on the latest entertainment news and pop culture happenings. You’re not up to date if you haven’t watched the day’s edition of E! News with anchors Jason Kennedy, Giuliana Rancic and the team of E! News correspondents.

  1. Giuliana Rancic

The undisputed queen of E! is Giuliana Rancic, co-anchor of E! News. We’ve known her since she was Giuliana DePandi. We saw her interview her future-husband Bill Rancic, followed their marriage, their struggle for a child and Giuliana’s battle against breast cancer. Besides the Giuliana and Bill reality series that ran for seven seasons on E!, Giuliana is the regal reporter of the red carpet. Everybody who’s anybody queues at awards shows hoping to get a moment with Giuliana and the E! microphone.

  1. How Do I Look? SA

Roxy Burger and Kat Sinivasan have been the co-hosts of the South African edition since 2017, helping fashion-challenged South Africans go from frumpy to fashionable with astounding personal transformations in this beautiful makeover show.

  1. E! Africa Pop Awards

To mark its 15-year anniversary in Africa, E! decided to recognise some of the most iconic and influential people in Africa’s entertainment industry with the first-ever E! Africa Pop Culture Awards. The awards celebrate the best in the biz in categories ranging from music, fashion, film and TV, to social media, philanthropy, and the highlight – the Ultimate Pop Culture Icon award – with winners including Trevor Noah, Black Coffee, Akin Omotoso and more.
