A brand new telenovela tops this long weekend’s local picks

Mzansi Magic debuts a brand new telenovela while Moja Love looks at life after fame for some of SA’s most familiar faces. All this and so much more this week in DStv’s top local picks.

Easter weekend in Mzansi just got a lot better with brand-new shows, as well as the return of old favourites.

DiepCity is a new South African series that sheds light on the harsh realities of the nation. Tune in on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) to follow the lives of four teenage girls as they are forced into a life of crime. Also on Mzansi Magic, Pastor Wants A Wife follows two god-fearing men looking for love with women who hold the same morals and religious beliefs, while The Station tells the tale of four petrol-station workers who inherit their place of work only to find out someone is determined to destroy their newfound fortune.

kykNET (DStv channel 144) has two new shows that will keep you coming back for more. G.I.L. (Grobbies Internasionale Lughawe) is a laugh-out-loud comedy following an enthusiastic guy who lands his dream job of running an “international” airport. In Karakter, Riaan van Heerden sets off to find South Africa’s most unique individuals. Along the way, he’ll hear about the eccentric characters from their communities before he gets to meet them himself.

Ever wondered what happened to South Africa’s celebs of years past? After Fame on Moja Love (DStv channel 157) takes us into the realities of the stars of yesteryear – those who have made the successful leap into other industries and those who have failed miserably.

There’s loads more local love to enjoy on DStv.

Diep City

This telenovela comes from the production team behind Lockdown, and centres on four young women who were forced into crime while still in high school, just to make ends meet. Now, they’re trying to make their way in the world. The first of the four we meet is small-time housebreaker Nox (Nozuko Ncayiyane) who was arrested after her brilliant little brother was shot dead during a robbery. Now she’s back home with her alcoholic dad and angry mom, Thandiwe (Dawn Thandeka King), who blames her for her brother’s death.
