Power S6

S6 Pushes both Ghost (Omari Hardwick) and his estranged wife, Tasha (Naturi Naughton), into deadly decisions that will cost them both their closest allies and friends. Ghost is out for revenge on his former street brother and righthand man, Tommy, for accidentally murdering Ghost’s love, Angie (Lela Loren), while trying to assassinate Ghost in the S5 finale, while Tasha’s former BFF, Lakeisha (La La Anthony), starts courting trouble when Tasha sees her as a threat to her son, Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr). And Tariq is raising hell himself by following in Daddy’s footsteps as his posh private school’s new drug dealer.

But while Tasha will be putting out fires to protect Tariq, Ghost will be concentrating on the same agenda that he’s had since S1: to escape the criminal underworld and make a name for himself as a legitimate businessman. This season, Ghost’s political ambitions will have his enemies gunning for him harder than ever.

PS: Hot on the heels of the Power series finale on Tuesday, 1 September on 1Magic (DStv 103), 1Magic will be launching into the spin-off series Power Book II: Ghost. So this is a great time to catch up.

Perry Mason S1

Private investigator Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys), based on the character in the Erle Stanley Gardner noir crime fiction novels, starts peeling the rotten onion of power, corruption, big money and politics in early 1930s Los Angeles when a tragic child-kidnapping case turns complicated. While Perry doggedly pursues his case, it brings him into the orbit of charismatic preacher Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany), who drums up a public frenzy when she claims that God has told her to resurrect the little victim. The stark, Depression-era divide between rich and poor, and the power imbalances supported by a violent police force who’d go to any length to close a case… other than solving it, are notes that still ring true in 2020. And in a world without DNA evidence, it’s fascinating to see the kind of steps that Perry must take to shine a spotlight on the guilty.

Briarpatch S1

Briarpatch follows chic Washington DC political aide and investigator Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson) as she goes around her eccentric Texas hometown of San Bonifacio asking questions in an effort to find out who murdered her sister, Felicity (Michele Weaver), a police officer. Felicity’s death makes Allegra a millionaire thanks to an insurance policy she recently took out, but Allegra soon finds out that Felicity’s life had even bigger mysteries.

San Bonifacio is a small border town where anything goes, if you have the political clout and the cash to back it. Allegra’s childhood best friend, Jake Spivey (Jay R Ferguson), is now the richest man in town but everyone is gunning for him, and in Allegra, both rising politician Senator Joseph Ramirez (Enrique Murciano) – Allegra’s boss and sometime lover – and Jake’s crazy-violent ex-business partner, Clyde Brattle (Alan Cumming), see someone they can exploit to get to Jake. Adding to these creatures prowling about, a zoo full of animals has escaped and tigers and giraffes are roaming San Bonifacio as if they’re out for a quick jog and coffee. If you’re looking to drop in briefly for a grip on the characters, episode 4, which is Felicity’s funeral, can jumpstart your experience.

Housekeepers S2

Trainee lawyer-turned-undercover housekeeper-turned-killer Linda (Thando Thabethe) left a vital piece of evidence behind as she fled her crime scene after taking revenge on the evil couple who orchestrated her innocent mother’s death in prison in S1. Now in S2, the cop who finds the evidence and connects the dots uses it to blackmail Linda into going undercover as a cleaner and household servant again – this time inside the household of the Ngubanes. The Ngubanes, headed by patriarch Clive (Lindani Nkosi), run a funeral parlour. But the bodies that they’re burying didn’t all die natural deaths. Let’s just say that the Ngubanes provided a little banana peel on the staircase of life now and then. And for a stiff payment under the counter, they can also discreetly clean up potentially embarrassing problems, like corpses that could destroy a man’s career. Inside the Ngubanes’ high-security compound, Linda must keep her mask as a know-nothing mop pusher, a quiet nobody who sees everything. But when son of the house Sydney Ngubane (SK Khoza) takes a shine to her, their connection, chemistry and common interests could blow Linda’s cover.
