CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup

The CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will resume with matchday three and matchday one group phase fixtures respectively on the coming weekend, including key home matches for South African contenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Tune into DStv and GOtv for all the action.

Sundowns claimed a heated 2-1 win over Wydad Casablanca on January 19 which nearly ended in a brawl between players, coaches and officials. Yet manager Pitso Mosimane was proud of his side, not only for the result but also their refusal to be bullied by the gamesmanship of the North Africans.

The Brazilians will be looking for back-to-back home wins when they host another former African champion, Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night in Group A.

Pirates will also be at home the following evening, looking to defend their place at the top of Group B when they host Tunisian giants and current African kings Esperance de Tunis. The Blood and Gold will represent a true litmus test for the Buccaneers, who have performed solidly in their previous group matches but will now be faced with a true heavyweight of the continent.

Group C will have just one match – TP Mazembe and Club Africain meeting in Lubumbashi on Saturday afternoon – following last week’s news that CAF has ejected Egypt’s Ismaily from the competition for crowd trouble in the previous round.

Group D sees Egyptian giants Al Ahly looking to keep up their place at the top of the log when they host Tanzania’s Simba, a match which will be preceded by AS Vita v JS Saoura in Kinshasa on Saturday evening.

The CAF Confederation Cup will have its first group stage matches this weekend and there are derbies aplenty. In Group A, Moroccan sides Hassania Agadir and Raja Casablanca will do battle, with their compatriot club RS Berkane away to AS Otoho in the Congo.

Group B features a Tunisian derby between Etoile du Sahel and CS Sfaxien, as well as an all-West African clash between Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers and Burkina Faso’s Salitas, while Group C is headlined by the Zambian battle between Zesco United and Nkana.

The latter pool also sees an intriguing clash between Al Hilal and Asante Kotoko of Sudan and Ghana respectively, while Group D’s matches are Gor Mahia v Zamalek and Hussein Dey v Petro de Luanda.
