Rainbow Nation at the Rainbow Cup

In the warm-up to the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa in July and August (with the hotly contested final 36-man squad announced live on SuperSport Rugby on Thursday, 6 May), the Rugby Union’s Rainbow Cup is underway at last. The competition has now been split between Northern and Southern divisions to accommodate South Africa’s COVID-19 travel restrictions.

In the North, 12 clubs are competing for the title: Teams Benetton and Zebre from Italy; from Wales the Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets; from Ireland teams Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster; and from Scotland teams Edinburgh and the Glasgow Warriors. We’ll be keeping a close watch on all the players who’ve made their way onto the Lions tour.

And in the South, the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers will do battle for the Rainbow Cup SA title (The Cheetahs withdrew from the competition and the Southern Kings disbanded in September 2020). There’s blood in the water because this is Springbok Rugby captain and former Stormers titan Siya Kolisi’s first tournament playing for KZN’s Sharks.

The teams will each play 6 rounds of fixtures and be ranked in a single league table, and the top 2 teams at the end of the 6 rounds will contest a final on Saturday, 19 June.

Get ready to feel that familiar pride and  excitement as SA’s greatest players take the field, including many of your favourite faces from the brilliant Chasing The Sun documentary.
