Channel O keeps the party going during lockdown spoke to DJs PH and Shimza on their massively successfully #lockdownhouseparty, created in association with Channel O (DStv 322).

Music has a way for bringing people together and this has been proven by DJs PH and Shimza. Despite the whole country being on lockdown, the two artists have been able to ensure that South Africans remain connected and entertained during this period 21-day period.

After the success of their #OnlineQuarantineParty, which was streamed by thousands of fans, Shimza and PH have taken the vibe to television in order to reach more people. Last week, music lovers got to see some of Mzansi’s most love and popular DJs, including Zinhle and Maphorisa, bringing the heat on the #LockdownHouseParty, in association with Hunters Cider and Channel O (DStv 433).

On how he got to be part of this initiative, PH explained: “Shimza hit me up and hit the rest of us up, before he even finished the sentence I was like ‘yo, where and when?’ I think most of us who were on that lineup are very passionate about what we do… This was a way to reach out to our supporters and give them what they support us for.”

So, why is it important for the DJs to keep their fans entertained during this time? “People love music, at the end of the day. We’re passionate about what we do. It’s a platform for us to deliver what we do to people,” PH said.

He added that people being confined to their homes for 21 days is foreign territory. “We love music in this country. I think being able to dance at home to your favourite artists, your favourite DJs is a blessing… It’s amazing.” He added that throughout the show they still communicate the message of taking the necessary measures like sanitising and washing hands.”

For these record-breaking DJs, this is more than just a party as they’re also executive producers of the show. This is a very big moment for them. Shimza shared that they were shocked when they walked into the studio where the show is recorded. “We were like ‘bro, how did we get here?’ It’s blessings, man. It’s blessings… And now we need to take the opportunity we’ve been given by the channel and see how we can maximise in terms of the access that we have to create more content that will speak to what we do.”

They both encouraged other artists who’ve been hit hard by the lockdown to think outside of the box. They also believe that this will inspire change in the South African music industry.

“It’s a step in the right direction. It’s an opportunity, it’s a blessing… Just to echo what Shimza said, it’s about thinking outside of the box and doing things differently and I think this is a different, new direction we can take…”

Shimza gave props to everyone who worked behind the scenes and the DJs involved. He added that everyone is giving their 100%.

You’re invited to the #LockdownHouseParty, from the comfort of your home, on Friday at 18:00 on Channel O, DStv channel 320.
