DStv bags 152 nominations at 2020 SAFTAs

The broadcaster’s commitment to original content is proving invaluable to the local entertainment industry.

So much so, in fact, that the original television shows and feature films available on DStv have garnered a whopping 152 nominations collectively at the 2020 South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTAs).

Now in its 14th year, the SAFTAs were established to celebrate, promote and highlight the excellence of local talent by encouraging the growth of talent within the South African film and television industry. DStv’s selection of the best original local content available nationally emerged victorious on 14 February 2020, when as the National Film and Video Foundation announced more than 152 television shows and feature films available on DStv and nominated for SAFTAs.

The forefront of authentic storytelling

DStv’s local entertainment channels, spearheaded by Mzansi Magic (DStv ch. 161) secured a whopping 78 nominations at the 2020 SAFTAs. This includes nominations for:

South Africa’s leading Afrikaans-language channel KykNet, meanwhile, impressed tremendously with an amazing 68 nominations. The channel’s feature films Poppie Nongena, Fiela se kind, Die verhaal van Racheltjie de Beer, ‘n Ander mens and Die seemeeu received a total of thirty nominations collectively.

In addition to DStv’s group channels being recognized for their original local programmes, DStv’s third party channel partners – who bolster our local programming offering even more with their original programmes - are also proving to be strong contenders for for the highest honour in South African television.

ViacomCBS Networks Africa, for example, scooped six nominations for the 2020 awards. Home to popular local productions on MTV Africa, MTV Base Africa and BET Africa, the networks received nominations for Yo! MTV Raps, MTV Shuga (2 nominations) and The Big Secret 2 (3 nominations).

Disney was also nominated in the Best Children’s Programme category for Disney Cookabout. The channel’s Senior Vice President and Country Manager told DStv that it was an honour for Disney Cookabout to be recognised in the Best Children’s Programme category for a third time. “We have been thrilled at the viewer reception to all three seasons of this series, our first long-form production in Africa. The show was inspired by Disney’s long-standing global commitment to inspire healthy living through imaginative and entertaining family content,” she said.

In the Best International Format Show category, NBC Universal received a nomination for Celebrity Game Night. Lee Raftery, Managing Director, EMEA and Chief Marketing Officer, NBCUniversal International comments, “We are delighted that our award-winning international format, Celebrity Game Night – along with its incredible host Anele Mdoda – have both been nominated at this year’s SAFTAs. E! is known for being on the red carpet, but we hope to be picking up more than fashion tips at this awards show!”

Meanwhile, VIA (DStv ch. 147) received three nods – including Best Variety Show (Mooi), Best Lifestyle Programme (Dit Proe Soos Huis and Klankbord Season 1). The channel told DStv it was thrilled at the news. “Our production teams worked hard to ensure our shows are of great quality and tell engaging stories. We are grateful to partner with producers who take stories and craft them with so much care. Local content has been central to VIA’s DNA from day one, we’re grateful for the NFVF’s acknowledgement.

Outside of the TV category, Showmax also has two of the three short film nominees (Die Begrafnis and The Letter Reader); half of the best documentary nominees (Buddha in Africa and The Fun’s Not Over: The James Phillips Story); and two of the nominated feature films. Christiaan Olwagen’s Checkov adaptation, Die Seemeeu, is up for three acting awards, and the Bram Fischer biopic An Act of Defiance, is up for two craft awards.
