DStv Premium will have you feeling fresh this May

DStv Premium’s May shows and movies are all about fresh perspectives and unexpected stories, with shows like the hilarious Avenue 5, the noir-ish Coyote, and reality show The Masked Dancer

Whether you prefer your series serious or silly, DStv Premium fans are spoilt for choice this May.

2 brand-new series – Coyote, with Michael Chiklis, and Avenue 5 with Hugh Laurie – combine star power with innovative storytelling, and some previous favourites like The Split and The Unicorn return, too.

A new season of Ellen’s Game of Games and a twist on The Masked Singer called The Masked Dancer offer fun for the whole family. And if you’re looking to share some travel fun together, Joanna Lumley, Simon Reeve and Albert Lin will be your guides.

DStv Premium’s May reality series include hilarious kid chaos in The Blended Bunch, and local fans can expect a new season of medium series Dloz’lami.

May is a blockbuster movie month on DStv Premium, with premieres like TNT’s Twist, and a host of brand-new movies that tell unexpected stories with a social conscience. With female action stars like Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss, Margot Robbie and Ruby Rose, it’s going to be an explosively awesome May. And if you’re looking for Mother’s Day fun on Sunday, 9 May, Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan’s Military Wives is just the ticket, especially if mum loved Calendar Girls. Dramatic series


Coyote S1

In this blend of classic Western and Noir storytelling, US border patrol agent Ben Clemens (Michael Chiklis, star of The Shield, Fantastic Four, Gotham) has worked on the US-Mexico border for over 30 years, and on his last day on the job, he uncovers a smuggling ring’s secret cross-border tunnel. What he sees next shakes up his black-and-white views about policing the border, and he finds himself trying to lead a young sex trafficking victim to safety while teaching her how to get asylum in the US.

The Split S2

The Defoe sisters are still finding their feet in the newly merged law firm, Noble Hale Defoe, when this British legal drama series returns. Hannah’s acting squirrely while trying to hide her fling with Christie on the night before James and Rose’s wedding, but that’s going to blow up in her face as the season progresses and the firm gets embroiled in the high-profile Fi Hansen (Donna Air) celebrity divorce case. And mom Ruth comes to grips with the new power structure in the firm.

In The Dark S2

At the end of S1, crooked detective Dean kidnapped Murphy after she figured out that he murdered Tyson, and his car went over a bridge as she was fighting with him. While Mia was in hospital, drug boss Nia approached Murphy to launder money for her at Guided Hope, her school for training guide dogs for the blind. S2 picks up from that moment. Now, as Murphy tries to keep her friends, especially Felix, out of Nia’s claws this season, she’s expecting more trouble when Max returns.

Comedy series


Avenue 5 S1

Fans of The Orville and sci-fi comedy in general, prepare to blast off into space aboard interplanetary cruise ship the Avenue 5, with inept Captain Ryan Clark (High Laurie) and the ship’s billionaire owner, Herman Judd (Josh Gad). There’s been a technical mishap and now the ship is on an estimated 3-year journey back to Earth, with a dead chief engineer, and only enough supplies aboard for their planned 8-week cruise. The series is created by Armando Iannucci (Veep, I’m Alan Partridge, The Day Today).

The Unicorn S2

At the end of S1, eligible widower Wade (Walton Goggins) met a woman at the cemetery while putting flowers on his late wife's grave. Now he can’t stop thinking about her, which worries his friends. But Shannon (Natalie Zea) has been obsessing too, and they explore the complexities of fitting dating into their lives and introducing 1 another to their friends. Meanwhile, Wade’s daughter Grace battles to fit in at her new high school, and her sister, Natalie, is growing up and pushing boundaries.

The Conners S3

At the end of S2, Becky married Emilio, but he returned to the US from Mexico illegally, and Dan was in danger of losing the Conner family home after falling behind on bank payments. S2 begins with the Conners in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and Emilio hiding from ICE as he works in the Lunch Box kitchen. Dan is served an eviction notice, Darlene and Ben hit financial hard times, and all sorts of family secrets and revelations come out in these turbulent times.

The Masked Dancer S1

So, The Masked Singer, but with dancing? Yes! Craig Robinson (Darryl in The Office) hosts with judges Ken Jeong (hello again), Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green and Ashley Tisdale. Guest panellists include Will Arnett, Rob Lowe and Whitney Cummings. But it’s really hard to guess who’s under the full-body-and-mask costumes for Cotton Candy, Zebra, Disco Ball, Hammerhead and more. It could be a gymnast, a professional dancer, a singer, reality TV star, a rapper-turned-actor or even a science TV show host.

Ellen's Game of Games S4

S4 was filmed during the pandemic, so it looks a little different. There are no special guests for segments like Knockin' Boots and Stink Tank, and there’s no studio audience (although you will hear audience soundclips). A new quiz game, Hotter Hands, starts this season. Contestants have 60 seconds to answer 7 rapid-fire questions in a row correctly for the chance to go home with $100,000. Expect devious twists thanks to immediate eliminations in Know Or Go, and an unexpected prize in Make It Rain.

These series offer true-life stories and a look inside some startling lives. The Blended Bunch introduces a newlywed couple who’re trying to merge their 11 kids, ages 3-12, into 1 happy family. We catch up with fan favourites in new seasons of My 600Lb Life: Where Are They Now? and 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. For real-life shockers, we have Shocking Emergency Calls and To Catch A Smuggler S2, while local medium Thembi Nyathi is back counselling families in a brand-new season of the shocking, gripping Dloz’lami. And the new local romantic reality series Lovey Dovey Millionaire will have you cackling with glee.


The Blended Bunch S1

In this reality series, widower Spencer Shemwell and widow Erica Means have wound up in a family of 13. They united Spencer’s 4 kids and Erica’s 7 under 1 roof after they got married after just 6 weeks of dating and a whirlwind online romance. Now with 11 kids aged 3-12, they barely have a moment to breathe. And not everyone is onboard for family fun – Erica’s brother, Quinn, has some concerns about what Spencer brings to the table as a dad.

Only the freshest and the best for DStv Premium viewers! May is a blockbuster month for the movies, with TNT (DStv channel 137) premiering their new Oliver Twist adaptation, Twist, and great films on social issues like Just Mercy delivering stellar performances from the likes of Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. And moving films like Beneath A Sea of LightsPaper Friends and I’ll See You Around highlight experiences and stories that we seldom see in cinema.

Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan deliver stand-up and cheerful fun in Military Wives, which is based on a real-life story (1 to try if you loved Calendar Girls).

And there’s shoot-’em-up fun in action films The Kitchen with Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss, Birds of Prey (The Harley Quinn movie) with Margot Robbie, The Doorman with Ruby Rose, and apartment block shoot-’em-up classic The Raid: Redemption.

Movies for kids!

The kids are just as spoiled as the adults this May on DStv Premium – although often mom & dad can double their fun because a lot of these are great for parents, too. There’s a new movie for kids every Sunday at 15:00 on M-Net (DStv channel 101), including Combat Wombat, which comes to us from the Daisy Quokka team. May’s kids movies also lean heavily into fantasy and the imagination with titles like Four Kids and It, and Dreambuilders.



All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite

This is a new global wrestling league, founded in 2019 and headed by the Khan Family. Their star male and female wrestlers include some famous faces like Chis Jericho (yes, the actual rock star himself), Cody Rhodes (son of Dusty Rhodes) and his half-brother, Dustin Rhodes (Runnels), along with Cody’s wife, Brandi (well known to WAGS Atlanta fans and now also AEW’s Chief Brand Officer), AAA Mega Champion Tyson Smith, current AEW Women’s World Champion Hikaru Shida, and South African-born Angelico. PS: Look out for repeats of Friday’s episode on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.
