DStv’s #TGIFestive holiday specials are full of family feels

Whether your family is your group of friends or the whole crazy clan of grannies, uncles and cousins, you can find someone just like them in the DStv #TGIFestive holiday specials

There have been a lot of tough discussions in South African homes during 2020. But one of the toughest lately has been about what we’ll be doing as families this December. Many of us are making the choice to keep vulnerable family members safe, by keeping apart. So DStv has something special that will take some of the sting out of this Blue Christmas.

With local movies, soaps and cooking shows galore, you can find something to watch that’ll give you all the family feels – whether your family is a big group of friends, a cross-cultural confusion, a little ball of chaos, or one big, happy mess. There are granddads and grandmothers to love, city families and rural families, and families who’re just getting to know each other across cultural divides.

So take a look, plan your viewing parties and find your family on DStv with our #TGIFestive specials…

Find your family!

Somer Kersfees

If you love your family but they genuinely drive you bonkers when you’re all together, try this one for the nostalgia! A dysfunctional family embark on a beach holiday that forces them to confront how they grate on one another’s teeth like sand in your sandwich. You’ll recognise this lot, from the deadbeat dad who’s promising to be on his best behaviour, to the sister who brings home some rando from the beach, to the “end of her rope” mom who’d like everyone to shut their mouths and stop spoiling Christmas.

Herb & Moon

If you’re staying apart this year to help keep a beloved parent or grandparent safe, you’ll love watching this granddad who’ll do anything to stop his granddaughter from having the #WorstChristmasEver. Rebellious grandfather Herbert (Robert Whitehead) breaks out of his old-age home, and embarks on a cross-country roadtrip, helping strangers and lovers along the way, just so he can spend Christmas with his beloved granddaughter. We’ll be biting our nails and hoping that he can make it in time for Christmas Day. Cast includes Katherine Neethling and Keenan Arrison.

A Boere-Krismis

If your family is “half & half” in any way, you’ll appreciate the culture clash-Christmas in this chaotic comedy. Failed actress Claire, who’s a “soutie” (from an English South African family), tries to jump-start her career as an actress-director-writer by filming her fiancé’s Afrikaans clan for a documentary, as she spends her first holiday with them. But as she observes them, they each start revealing aspects of themselves that don’t play into the stereotypes that she has in mind. Cast includes Lara Toselli, Johann Vermaak, Sean Cameron Michael, and Albert Maritz.

Home Affairs: A Christmas Tale

If every family occasion has someone walking out crying mid-discussion, but you still end the day feeling the love, this is your movie. The Williams clan’s mum Trish (66) and dad Chris (68) are in full Christmas mode and awaiting the arrival of their children, Emily (37), Justin (35), James (33) and Lilly (21). But the kids are going through all kinds of heartache, and they are dreading their affairs being forced into the open as they spend the holidays together. Cast includes Hilton Pelser, David Viviers and Bronté Snell.

Liewe Kersfeesvader

This local treat is an oldie but a goodie. If you’re the one keeping the whole crazy, fragmented family together over the holidays and you’re really feeling the weight this year, you’ll feel for our heroine, Nonnie. Teen beauty queen Nonnie (Mila Guy) becomes the adult of the house after her mom walks out on Christmas Day, and her dad, Herman (Morné Visser), just gives up on everything. Things get even tougher 3 months later when Herman starts insisting that he is Father Christmas, wearing the red-and-white Santa suit year-round.

A Zulu Christmas

If your parents packing you off to the rurals for the holidays was the best part of your year growing up and you love your granny most of all, this is a must-watch. A spoilt city boy is sent to spend the holidays with his grandmother on her farm in rural KZN. For many kids, that would be a dream come true, but this one isn’t ready for Granny’s list of daily chores. But she is also a fountain of stories about his heritage and their family’s traditions. Cast includes Deli Malinga, Sphumuzo Sidzumo and Ayanda Banda.

A Christmas Chorus

It’s time to put on a show (or make plans for a virtual watch party together) if your family is your friends and your friends are dramatic, darling and daring. Lockdown has hit the South African entertainment industry hard. Theatres are closed, and that means no festive pantomime. Now, a group of theatre friends are coming together to save Christmas from the Coronavirus, with a virtual event at Cape Town’s Fugard Theatre. But egos are running hot, and personal agendas could wreck their good intentions. Cast includes Bianca Flanders, Namisa Mdlalose and Dean Balie.

Twisted Christmas

If your family believes that Christmas traditions are worth embracing and celebrating, no matter what your religion, this is the kind of “twisted” strand of tinsel you’ll love. A rich family loses everything just before Christmas, and the only person willing to take them in is their long-time Muslim gardener (and his family). With such kindness, there’s plenty of reason to be merry as everyone celebrates a “Mubarak” Christmas in Cape Town’s BoKaap, and they learn the meaning of real family. Cast includes Kate Liquorish, Euodia Samson and Abduragman Adams.

In this 5-part Christmas special, 5 South African chefs are opening their doors to their own homes and kitchens to show us how they’re preparing their ultimate 2020 Christmas menus. It’s everything, from the classics like gammon and trifle, to new twists and tricks. As they work, they’ll also chat about what Christmas, family and togetherness mean to them.
