Love beyond borders

The tale of the couples in the ever-expanding 90 Day franchise is complex and 1 filled with plenty of obstacles. First off, the pairs are from different countries. They get acquainted on social media sites or dating apps, and after they’ve established that they’ve developed feelings for each other, they travel across borders and meet each other in person. The process is followed with the couples applying for the K-1 visa, which is a document that allows the engaged partner of a US citizen to live in the country for 90 Days while the couple arranges their wedding. But wait, there’s more…

For some pairs, the culture clash, language barriers, and disapproving family members who’re out to ruin their romance prove too much and they eventually split. Others, though, like Florida-native Elizabeth Potthast (29) and her Romanian husband, Andrei Castravet (34), withstand the curveballs thrown at them and they get married. But as Andrei and Elizabeth explain, the real work begins when the couple return from their honeymoon and move in together ‒ the scenario that plays out in Happily Ever After?.

“We’d like to continue sharing our journey of love,” says Andrei. “We were in a long-distance relationship for 2 years, and it was tough, particularly when we didn’t know whether our K-1 visa was going to get approved or whether we were going to be together.” Since then, the pair have gotten hitched and they’ve welcomed their daughter, Eleanor, into the world in 2019. “We’ve overcome many challenges after getting married. Why not continue sharing our growth with viewers? Besides, it’s more interesting,” adds Elizabeth.

Now Andrei and Elizabeth spill the tea on their marital state and what viewers can expect from Elizabeth’s meddling family in 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? S6

Clashing with the family

Andrei and Elizabeth were introduced to viewers in S5 (2018) of 90 Day Fiancé. They met while she was on vacation in Dublin, and he was working as a nightclub bouncer, and they remained in contact after she returned to the US. Their undeniable chemistry wasn’t enough for Elizabeth’s family to get onboard, though. They’ve made it a point to drive a wedge between the couple. Simply put: They didn’t trust Andrei’s intentions, especially because the couple was in a rush to get married.

The Potthasts have expressed their concerns about Andrei’s offensive attitude towards the family, like when he lost his temper and almost physically attacked Elizabeth’s brother, Charlie, in 90 Day Fiancé S5. They’re afraid that Andrei is controlling, and because Elizabeth is too accommodating of his views, she might fall into a trap of neglecting her dreams and become a submissive wife.

The couple reveal that despite their efforts, Elizabeth’s loved ones still, to this day, refuse to accept Andrei as part of the family. “I’ve always wanted Andrei and my family to get along so that we could be 1 big happy family and enjoy each other’s company. However, it didn’t turn out the way I anticipated. In the long run, Andrei and I have established a strong bond because we lean on each other for everything,” says Elizabeth.

Andrei adds that Elizabeth’s family have nothing to worry about: “I treat her well. They don’t see us when we are at home and in our element. Like ‘normal’ couples, we have arguments and we’re not perfect, but I care about Elizabeth and being the competitive man that I am, I accept the challenge, and I want to prove them wrong.”

Another speedbump

After moving to the US, Andrei earned a real estate license, and in this season of Happily Ever After?, the stay-at-home dad puts his pride aside and asks his father-in-law Chuck for a $100,000 (R1.3 million) loan to get his estate agency off the ground. Rather than writing Andrei a cheque, though, Chuck offers him a job at his own real estate firm instead. But Andrei is in 2 minds about accepting the offer.

“There are many underlying issues to work through this season. In my family’s defence, I’m the youngest girl in the house, so they have a natural inkling to protect me,” explains Elizabeth, who reveals that it hasn’t been easy attending functions with her family being uneasy about her husband. “I go for Eleanor’s sake. Andrei tries to avoid the events, but we’ve realised that we must build these memories [with my family] for our daughter, no matter how hard it is. Andrei bites his tongue, and he tries to be cordial. But you can’t blame him, with all the comments that my family makes,” she says.

As in 90 Day Fiancé, there’s a heated confrontation between Andrei and Elizabeth’s family in this season of Happily Ever After?. But this time around, there is hope for the 2 parties to bury the hatchet. “I’m waiting for the day when we are all on the same page,” explains Elizabeth. “Some people [in my family] are more tolerant than others. My mom is our biggest supporter and that’s enough for us.”

Couple’s yoga & blocking negativity

During lockdown, Andrei and Elizabeth started couple’s yoga to relieve the tension caused by the uncertainty of the pandemic. “I am separated from my family; they are in Romania and I’m in the US. I didn’t know when I was going to see them again, which was tough. Elizabeth and I found ourselves bickering about the small stuff, so we found a way to relax through couple’s yoga and that has helped in releasing the stress,” explains Andrei.

When it comes to the negative remarks that they receive from viewers, Elizabeth reveals that she ignores it. “I block out whatever I can. My family is already hard to deal with. Their opinions alone are harsh. So, when I see a criticism online, it doesn’t faze me. It’s another person’s opinion, and they're entitled to it. I’m just focused on living my life, my way.”
