In the shadow of the Old Masters

It’s all about martial arts on KIX (DStv 114) as newcomers are keeping the icons’ legacy alive

Martial arts is big – both in the gyms and onscreen. While some South Africans enjoy fighting their way to fitness at a karate dojo or Muay Thai gym, others prefer to enjoy their martial arts from the comfort of their couch without the risk of losing teeth. Fortunately, KIX (DStv 114) is ready to give you your fix whenever and however you want it.

As well as being home to all the VHS-era classics dating back to the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, KIX specificallyshowcases Modern Action from Asia and Hollywood every Thursday at 19:00, as well as hosting new films every day of the week aside from Classic Martial Arts Mondays. And when you watch a new movie and a classic in the same week, you can see for yourself how the young apprentices on the martial arts movie scenestack up to the icons like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

Here are a few of the modern faces of martial arts to watch for this November.

Wu Jing in City Under Siege (2010)

Jing’s family are no strangers to martial arts. Both his father and grandfather made a name for themselves as respected martial artists. Jing made a huge impression on his teachers at age 6, and he’s been making his mark as a skilled fighter ever since. He is especially well-known for his effortless but powerful kicks that will send any onscreen mobster flying through the air. Even circus performers with superhuman abilities are no match for him, as can be seen in the 2010 movie City Under Siege.

Aaron Kwok in Divergence (2005)

He may have started out as a dancer, but Kwok certainly puts those nimble feet to good use in every fight scene he’s in. And who else was also a dancer? The iconic Bruce Lee, of course! Lee, known as the man who made martial arts mainstream, was even made the Crown Colony Cha Cha dancing champion in the 1950s. Expect to see Kwok showcase similar light-footed movements as Lee did in the ’70s in Divergence, as well as City Under Siege.

Sean Lau in The White Storm (2013)

Sean Lau won fans over in the Chinese action film Call of Heroes in 2016 with his skills with a whip. But Sean made a name for himself in the early 2000s as the guy with a sharp wit and a tendency to make any fight scene a little less dramatic – similar to the legendary Jackie Chan. And as with Chan, Lau is a highly versatile actor, having tackled drama, action, romance and comedy roles in the past. And it shows in The White Storm, in whichhe plays the responsible but jaded brother desperate to save Hong Kong and, ultimately, his troubled sibling.

Pierre Ngo in The Real Iron Monkey (2014)

The Iron Monkey movie franchise is almost sacrosanct among martial arts fans, with the 1993 classic having given us the likes of Donnie Yen as the Iron Monkey. So, when relative newcomer Ngo took up the role as the grandson of the great Iron Monkey in 2014, he had massive monkey shoes to fill. Unlike many of his peers, who have little to no real fight training, Ngo has a strong background in kung fu, and he certainly puts that training to good use in The Real Iron Monkey. The franchise remains safe in his skilled hands.
