Kate Winslet-produced limited series tops this week’s top picks


Oscar winner Kate Winslet produces and stars in a gripping limited series coming to DStv, while returning favourites round out this week’s line-up of must watch international shows.

This week, it’s all about family and community in DStv’s exciting line-up of new and returning shows.

In Mare of Easttown on M-Net (DStv channel 101), Kate Winslet takes the producer’s seat and the lead role as a traumatised small-town detective. As she pushes the boundaries of solving a murder, she uncovers the secrets and tragedies of her small-knit community.

Also on M-NetThis Is Us returns for its fifth season. While Kate confronts her past, Randall makes an unexpected discovery and Kevin debates his future, the show also engages with topical events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and police brutality. Sheldon is back on M-Net, too, in Young Sheldon. Tune in for more crazy antics and witty comments from the boy genius as he struggles to fit in with his classmates and family.

New to 1Magic (DStv channel 103)First Wives Club is based on the 1996 film of the same name. Set in New York City, this light-hearted comedy follows ex-wives Ari, Bree and Hazel as they come together after their marriages fall apart.

And tVN (DStv channel 134) brings a new K-drama to our screens with Lawless Lawyer. Seeking to avenge his mother, former gangster-turned-lawyer Bong Sang-pil teams up with suspended lawyer Ha Jae-yi to fight for justice – with law and their fists.

Mare of Easttown

In this limited series, Kate Winslet not only stars as the headstrong female lead but also takes the producer’s seat for the first time. While trying to keep her life from falling apart, traumatised small-town detective Mare Sheehan (Winslet) must solve a brutal murder. As she constantly pushes the boundaries, she also uncovers the dark past and secret tragedies in her close community.

Lawless Lawyer

This Is Us S5

As with many other shows, season 5 of This Is Us returns amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike other shows, however, it found a genuine and productive way to engage with not only the pandemic but also other current events, such as police brutality. Through it all, Kate confronts her past, Randall’s viral brush with fame leads to an unexpected discovery and Kevin debates the path for his future.

After the end of Big Bang Theory, this show has kept the spark of Sheldon alive.
