#Goals! Just because the lights go out shouldn’t mean you should miss out
South Africa breathed a collective sigh of relief as President Cyril Ramaphosa finally announced in August that the country would be moving down to level 2 lockdown restrictions. And while that means a bit more freedom for citizens across the country, it sadly also means sporting fans still won’t be allowed to watch their favourite games live. And the recent return of loadshedding has also made it more difficult for sports fanatics to tune in for a thrilling game of footie from Europe.
But don’t despair! SuperSport’s got your back, bringing you all the greatest sporting events right to your living room – and ensuring you get to watch that all-important game, no matter when the lights finally come back on.
Whether it’s rugby, tennis, golf, formula one, cricket, cycling, wrestling or even NASCAR – thanks to the DStv Now app, you’ll be able to follow all the live action on your mobile device (mobile data permitting) and avoid the dreaded FOMO. Here are just a few of the big sporting events coming your way late-August into September.
Kicking off on Monday, 31 August, the US Open on SS Tennis (DStv 214) runs until Sunday, 13 September and will be the first major tennis event since COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill. Sadly, Rafael Nadal won’t be making his way onto the tennis court, citing safety concerns earlier this year. And other fan favourites Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer might also miss out on this year’s tournament due to ongoing injury concerns.
Originally scheduled to start on Saturday, 27 June, COVID-19 also forced one of the most gruelling cycling events of the year to press pause. But on Saturday, 29 August, the 3 470 km (yes, 3 000!) race will finally kick off on SS Variety 1 (DStv 206).
Speeding your way on Sunday, 6 September, SS Motorsport (DStv 216) will be bringing you all the fast-paced action of the Italian Grand Prix. Covering 53 laps on the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, will Lewis Hamilton be able to beat Charles Leclerc this year round?
England is set to defend home ground from Friday, 4 to Wednesday, 16 September in the now-confirmed England vs Australia tour as they battle it out in various one-day and T20 matches, starting with 3 lightning-fast T20 matches from Friday, 4 to Tuesday, 8 September on SS Cricket (DStv 212).
Replacing the 2020 Super Rugby season due to COVID-19, the first Super Rugby AU whistle blew on Friday, 3 July. It’s now nearing its Saturday, 19 September end, and the final promises to be a nail-biter. Currently there’s just a 2-point difference between the Reds and season-dominating Brumbies, so the Super Saturday match on Saturday, 5 September on SS Rugby (DStv 211) is a must-watch.
Don’t forget! SuperSport will be dropping its numbering system from Tuesday, 1 September and instead bringing Premium subscribers brand-new sport-specific channels, making it easier for fans to find their favourite sporting events. A few additional sporting channels will also be added.
Happy watching!
