Pandemic: COVID-19 coming to Discovery Channel

Take an in-depth look at the virus sweeping the globe in this one-hour special premiering on Discovery Channel (121) this weekend. Find out how the pandemic started, its spread across America and the search for a possible cure.

The whole world is on lockdown. Overnight, COVID-19, a novel form of the Coronavirus, has changed the way we interact, work and live. As the death toll rises, scientists and experts take a closer look at the global epidemic, its origins and a possible solution in this one-hour special.

COVID-19 – the origin story

It’s believed the virus first jumped from animals to humans in a market in Wuhan, China. How does this happen? And why were doctors and scientists so baffled by its treatment and transmission in the early patients who were infected? Follow the unfolding story in this Discovery Channel documentary, which shows how in a short time span, COVID-19 spread throughout China and beyond, kickstarting a pandemic unrivalled in modern history.

What have we learnt?

Despite quarantines in multiple countries, in a few short weeks the virus spread, reaching over 290 000 (and counting) confirmed cases worldwide and even countries on lockdown, like Italy, that closed institutions, schools and businesses to prevent transmission, are seeing hundreds die each day. In this one-hour special, scientists and experts reveal why COVID-19 is unique, why the world was so unprepared for it and what could have been done differently to contain its spread.

Corona in America

Trace the origin of the outbreak in the United States, which as of 23 March 2020, has the third-highest number of cases, with over 30 000 infections. Viewers can follow Coronavirus’s dramatic and unexpected transmission across the US from the first patient, its rapid spread in Seattle and how the US government is responding to the pandemic.

Tune in to Discovery Channel this Sunday to hear from leading experts in medicine, as well as science and academia, as those in the know try to find answers, and a possible cure, for a virus that continues in its upward trajectory.
