Regina King explodes onto our screens as Sister Night

Fans were blown away by the first episode of HBO’s Watchmen, which takes place 30 years after events in the graphic novel.

Things that fans did know going into episode one: HBO’s Watchmen is set in an alternative 2019 in the US, where there’s no internet access and police wear masks to protect their identities against a terror group called the 7th Kavalry.

What fans didn’t know, and you’ve probably seen trending on Twitter: That the #BlackWallStreet massacre that kicks off the opening scenes is not fiction at all – it actually happened!

Watchmen comes to DStv express from the US on Monday nights.

Episode 1: It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice

Run time: 58 mins

In the season premiere, we meet Angela Abar, played by Oscar-winner Regina King, who is a masked vigilante called Sister Night working with the police to wipe out a white supremacy terrorist movement headed by Rorschach. She works closely with Chief Judd Crawford, played by Don Johnson, as well as another vigilante called Looking Glass, who wears a reflective mask and has a talent for at extracting information from suspects.

We’re also introduced to the reclusive aristocrat Adrian Veidt a.k.a. Ozymandias – the smartest man in the world, played by Jeremy Irons, who is perfectly cast. He’s in hiding in the countryside, but it’s unclear where he fits into the picture just yet.

And did we mention that it’s raining baby squids?
