SA Idol Yanga makes her mark

As you become engrossed with the new season of Idols SA, are you wondering what happened to last year’s winner Yanga Sobetwa? Here’s an update.

Yanga was the second teenager in two consecutive years to win Idols SA after Cape Town’s Paxton Fielies, confirming yet again that the Mother City is a hub of unstoppable young talent. Throughout the season, she was a force to be reckoned with, consistently improving week on week, taking all the judges critique into account. She was a worthy winner, and not just because it takes a lot for a 17-year-old to defy all the odds and come out shining among a treasure trove of great singers.

Just like Season 11 runner-up Mmatema Moremi, Yanga’s first love is gospel music. With her prize money, she’d planned to study music and learn more about her craft. This wise girl knows that talent alone is not enough in the fickle and forever-changing music industry. Her first single, “Scars All Over Me”, which was the song she sang during the finals, has been released as a music video with recording company Gallo music. Her vision, she says, is to bring gospel music to the youth, and who better than a youngster to show her peers how cool gospel music can be. Gospel pop, as she calls it, will be the in thing very soon.

So are we in for another Gospel singer win this year? Guest judge gospel giant Dr Rebecca Malope joins the resident judging panel, so this might be exactly what she is looking for.

And is another teen about to sweep South African voters off their feet? It’s literally anyone’s game at this point - but don’t forget that your vote will be needed as the competition heats up.
