SA rugby is back…

…and firing on SuperSport!

Rugby is back, and SuperSport intends to make it a grandstand occasion.

Starting this weekend, three major events will take place to underpin SA rugby’s official return to play following the freeze on local and international sport. Each match will be broadcast on SuperSport’s all-new Grandstand channel (DStv 201), and also the rugby-dedicated channel (DStv 211).

On Saturday, the Vodacom Super Fan Saturday double-header will take place at Loftus Versfeld between the four Vodacom Super Rugby franchises: Vodacom Bulls v Cell C Sharks (16.25) and Emirates Lions v DHL Stormers (18.55).

The following Saturday, on October 3, the Castle Lager Springbok Showdown, an innovative new event, will take place at DHL Newlands featuring 50 of South Africa’s top players.

These players will be announced live on SuperSport Grandstand by team commissioners Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber. Teams will assemble in Cape Town next week, with a SuperSport crew on hand to document the behind-the-scenes build-up.

On Friday, team coaches Deon Davids and Mzwandile Stick will choose their team with their commissioner in a live alternating draw that itself has some dynamic variations. This will be broadcast on SuperSport from 18:00.

The “Best of The Best” match will be broadcast live, but with a fresh twist or two, including mic’d up players and match officials, in-match commentary from team commissioners and live tracking of performance data such as heart rate and speed.

Then, on October 10, South Africa’s seven franchises will start to battle it out for Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup honours. The seven provincial teams will head into a double round of local action over 16 weekends. The first round (October 10-November 21) will be for Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked glory.

Thereafter, all log points will then be carried into the second round Currie Cup (November 28-January 9), which will culminate in semi-finals (January 16) and a final on January 23 next year.
