Take the DStv Mother’s Day Challenge

We’re challenging you to give Mom the day off on Mother’s Day

She cooks, she cleans, she shops, she organises, she picks it up, kisses it better and sorts it out, 364 days a year. So we’re challenging you to give Mom the day off on Mother’s Day, Sunday 12 May – sit her down on the couch, put a cushion under her feet, fetch and carry and let her take a load off for the day while you and the rest of the family take over.

If you’re low on budget and short on time, we’ve done the thinking for you and compiled a perfectly-timed itinerary for the whole day.

11:00

While you: get the breakfast dishes done …

Mom can watch:
A Bad Mom's Christmas
A good comedy is a great way to start the day. A Bad Mom’s Christmas will provide a good few belly-laughs going, and drop a couple of home truths along the way. We loved Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn in the first film, and this time they’re joined by the brilliant Christine Baransky, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon, as the moms’ moms.

15:40

While you: clean up the last bits and bobs after lunch, then join mom on the couch – she is rather fond of you after all. (Bring Mom’s favourite pillow with you, so she can curl up for a nap after the show) …

Mom can watch:
Siba's Adventures Johannesburg
Whether lunch was a masterpiece or a bit of a disaster, this is the perfect (read: safest) time to sit down with Siba because honestly, it’s almost impossible to watch this show without getting hungry and wanting to attack the fridge. Siba's Adventures Johannesburg is also the exact right mix of fun and chilled for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

While you: get started on dinner (or order in – you’ve had a long day after all. Shame, you must be bushed) …

Mom can watch:
The Real Housewives of Atlanta
Friends, frenemies, drama and dirt – there’s nothing like a bit of indulgent reality TV to remind mom that she and her crazy family aren’t actually all that crazy after all. This four-episode bumper feast from 16:00 to 19:00 on 1Magic is the perfect chance for Mom to get her weekly fix if she’s been rushing home from work or stuck in the kitchen over the 18:00 slot from Monday to Thursday.

20:30

While you: clean up after dinner, get ready for bed (it is a school night after all), go kiss Mom goodnight (ideally during an ad break), and remind her one last time how much you love her ...

Mom can watch:
Tully
You know Mom will be in excellent hands with director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, the same team that brought us Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Young Adult, which starred Charlize Theron. Well, onse Charlize is back and brilliant as ever as Marlo, a mother of three who’s holding on by a thread until she decides to hire a nanny. Don’t be alarmed if you hear Mom alternately weeping with laughter and actually weeping – Tully is a real, raw and wonderful comedy-drama, and a little catharsis is good sometimes.

The house is quiet and clean, and Mom still has a bit of energy left over thanks to the awesomely relaxing day you dished up. This is a special (and probably quite rare) occasion in itself, and a great time for Mom to tuck into that slab of chocolate you so thoughtfully left in the fridge for her (hint, hint, hint)...

22:15

While you: sleep the righteous sleep of the best kid ever.

Mom can watch:
Fun Mom Dinner
In Fun Mom Dinner, four women whose only connection is their preschool kids decide to take an evening off from parenting together (leaving the dads in charge). But what starts out as a harmless (if slightly awkward) “fun mom dinner” is set to escalate into more than any of them expected, and just maybe, exactly what they all needed. Because every mom needs a time out.
