The E! People’s Choice Awards 2020 shared the love

The glamour was all there as stars collected their awards live at the E! People’s Choice Awards 2020

Pop culture has done its utmost to keep us afloat in 2020, from the early days of our Tiger King obsession, to our innocent online obsession with Doug The Pug. This year’s E! People’s Choice Awards (PCAs), broadcast live from Santa Monica and hosted by confirmed popular person Demi Lovato, was a huge thank you for the fun from fans, who all voted for their favourites.

Alas, the Red Carpet pre-show had to roll up its usual actual red carpet and put it in storage as social distancing efforts continue amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With no fans and no press crowding, there was no one for the stars to trot down the carpet in front of. Instead, E! Presenter and red-carpet queen Giuliana Rancic chatted to the evening’s presenters (including an utterly delightful Jameela Jamil, and Tracee Ellis Ross) from the Barker Hanger studio at an appropriate social distance. Giuliana also popped superfans up on the studio screen to allow them to each ask their favourite celeb one question.

In another area of the studio, E!’s Erin Lim, Nina Parker, Lauren Ash and Brad Goreski did retro countdowns of favourite E! Fashion moments and stars from the past – and with the Awards having happened every year since 1975, they had plenty to choose from. They also hit up the socials to report on what the celebs had been up to throughout the year.

On with the show

The People’s Choice Awards opened on a high note with Doug The Pug being awarded Animal Star of The Year. The camera showed a recording of Doug sitting in a teensy doggy tux, seated on some red carpet and being only a bit taller than his award.

The live show itself was held on a runway lined with giant screens filled with fans who were watching the show live. The show's presenters and winners came out live, too, and winners picked up their award trophies from a podium on the stage, so there were no sticky-handed germs exchanging hands. Stars who were on stage together stayed socially distant. In the words of Tyler The Creator, who later presented Tracee Ellis Ross her Fashion Icon Award (without touching it or her), “This is such an interesting setup.”

Host Demi Lovato opened the Awards proper by revealing what she'd been up to in lockdown, from getting engaged and unengaged, to ordering take-out food and scrolling on Instagram so much that she reached the end of the social site 4 times. Throughout the show, Demi gave the superfans space to ask questions. And according to Demi, the PCAs were the best party that she’s attended in 2020… and the only party she’s been to in the past 6 months.

The first live award of the evening, for the Female Movie Star, was presented by Jameela Jamil in her hot pink oversized suit by Christopher John Rogers. In a shock move, the Awards envelope found its way into the hands of one of those superfans, who announced Tiffany Haddish as the winner. This would happen throughout the ceremony as the fans reached out to thank their stars in person.

In terms of the live performances of the night, the Male Artist of 2020 winner Justin Bieber performed an achingly sung solo version of his song Lonely with Benny Blanco before walking out on the stage dressed in a white fuzzy jersey and white slacks to sing Holy live with his backing band and singers spaced out all around him at an appropriate social distance from him, and each other.

Chloe X Halle gave the second live performance of the night in matching skin-tight, sequined catsuits with exaggerated shoulders and daring cut-outs. Their even more perfectly matched voices and dance moves gave fans chills and were the only things that could outshine their outfits. They performed with masked back-up dancers as the PCAs emphasised, again, the importance of protecting ourselves and others.

The Night-time Talk Show of 2020 went to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy got Zoomed – i.e., he gave his entire speech on mute and when he finally figured it out, he was out of time and the cameras turned away. Winner of The Comedy Act of 2020, the always high-energy Leslie Jones, thanked her aunties to keep her in check, and everybody who made her look good in every way, while the Comedy Movie Star of 2020 winner, Joey King, revealed that The Kissing Booth 3 would be coming out in 2021.

Fashion

The fashion night absolutely belonged to the epic Tracee Ellis Ross, winner of the year’s Fashion Icon Award. Tracee walked onto the stage to a recording of Bruno Mars’s hit Just The Way You Are, while dressed in a billowing, angelic white high-low dress with a black harness and high-heeled leather boot pants and said, “Tracee, do you take fashion to be your lawfully wedded wife? I do, I do, I do!” After thanking her lifelong stylist, Karla Welch, Tracee also gave a nod to her mom, Diana Ross, for her sense of style, her glamour and her epic wardrobe. Her speech was a delight and a beacon to fashion fans to express their true selves at any budget, and to let art of that expression include their activism:

"People's Choice, I can't thank you enough for validating my shopping habit and validating little teenage Tracee who begged her mom for a seasonal clothing budget. Spoiler alert, I did not get it. Speaking of which, thank you to my father for paying for those chestnut suede Ralph Lauren jeans I tricked him into buying me when I was 14, for his impeccable style and for being my humour twin. And obviously I have to thank the icon herself, my mom not only for her great parenting and not acquiescing to my many whimsical demands, but to her style and glamour that introduced me to the power of fashion."

Tracee told fans, “Use fashion as an entrance. Let clothes be your superhero cape, allowing you to be the best you that you can be. Activate the clothes through your joy and commitment to the world that you want to see. It doesn't matter if you wear black tie or a ‘Black Lives Matter’ T-shirt, but suit up and show up, because our action creates our destiny, our joy creates space for our freedom.”

Tracee emphasised that style was all about being, not budget, after giving thanks to all the second-hand thrift shops who helped her hone her personal style while she was growing up. “Second-hand clothing helped me understand that style has nothing to do with money. It’s the way you put things together – style is the how, not the what. I spent years playing dress-up in my closet as a way to find some freedom or some power, and the more that I discovered who I really was, the more I was able to hone my creative expression through clothing. I wear my insides on the outside, and if featuring Black designers at American Music Awards helped someone see the power of Black artistry or if joining the call to wear black at the Golden Globes led to solidarity with women saying time’s up on sexual harassment, then you heard me loud and clear. If fashion is the thing that draws you in, use it as a tool for transformation.”

As to the rest of the show, there were a number of enviable looks.

The Drama TV Star of 2020, Mandy Moore, rocked a skin-tight, black, floor-length turtleneck Brandon Maxwell gown to highlight her date for the show – her unborn baby boy. That's right, mama Pearson and her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, and expecting their first baby together, and the baby bump was starting to make its appearance. Presenter Addison Rae looked sleek and gorgeous in a spaghetti-strapped red gown with black mesh detail at the breast. With her slicked-back hair, dark eyes and red lips, she looked effortlessly glamorous. The Female TV Star of 2020, Ellen Pompeo, embodied casual glam in a sparkly, glittering white mesh suit that looked like the world’s most glamorous pyjama set. And host Demi Lovato popped up in something new and chic every time she returned to the stage.

More on Awards Season

African Trailblazer of The Year

There was a new category at the 2020 PCAs. E! will be recognising local charity work in Africa with a brand-new award: African Trailblazer of The Year. And a South African has snatched the spotlight. Siya Kolisi – who led the Springboks to victory at the Rugby World Cup in 2019 (as seen in the hugely popular documentary series Chasing The Sun on DStv) – is being recognised for his extraordinary work off the sporting field with the launch of Kolisi Foundation earlier this year.

African Social Star 2020

Instagram sensation Elsa Majimbo got an early taste of the glamour and excitement when she found out that she’d been chosen as the E! People’s Choice Awards African Social Star of 2020. She beat fellow nominees like South Africa’s International Emmy Award-nominee and actress Thuso Mbedu, magician and TikTok star Wian van den Berg, and reigning Miss Universe Zozi Tunzi (who came in 3rd).

Special recognition

As well as recognising African excellence, this year the PCAs had 3 big names to honour in advance of the ceremony itself. Jennifer Lopez was awarded The People’s Icon Award, super-producer and Mr Madea himself Tyler Perry was honoured with The People’s Champion of 2020 Award, and actor, producer and CEO Tracee Ellis Ross was recognised with The Fashion Icon Award.

Tiffany Haddish came out to honour Tyler Perry. "He sees people, and he wants to make their lives a little better,” she insisted, before giving Tyler a shoutout for keeping all his employees paid up during the pandemic, even when they weren't working during lockdown. The entire team from Tyler Perry Studios joined the show live on screen to cheer him on as he accepted his award. Tyler, looking cosy in a full beard and enviable leather jacket, told fans to keep it up, and never give up.

People's Icon of 2020 Jennifer Lopez echoed that message about hard work and not having a shelf life. Jennifer arrived in person in full glam in a Christian Siriano red gown with puffy top and a short puffy skirt. Celebrities like Nicole Kidman joined in saying congratulations and showering praise on her via the fan screens. Jennifer really teared up when her own children, Max and Emme, came up onscreen to congratulate her.

“2020 was no joke, right? This year was the great leveller. It showed us what mattered, what didn't and for me, reinforced what matters most – people. Helping each other, loving each other, being kind to each other. And the importance of that connection, that human touch and I realise it’s what I strive for in everything I do, to reach people, to touch people. I believe that's what we all want, shared experiences, to know that we're not in this alone,” she said.

Jennifer thanked fans for keeping her going throughout her 30-year career. “Your belief and your faith in me motivates me to keep going, and sometimes when I'm tired or beaten down like a lot of us have been this year, it's my family, my friends, my babies and my fans, you guys, who have lifted me up when I couldn't lift myself. And I'm so grateful to have you, to have that in my life. Thank you. I approach my work and career the same way I approach my life. I lead with love, I feel with my heart, and I always try to speak with truth, in telling stories, singing songs and performing, I do so with the purpose of bringing a little happiness, creating beauty and inspiring others to do the same. I have seen and I have learnt a lot, and I am still learning, and I want to thank you and tell you how much I appreciate you for letting me do that in front of you all of these years. As a Latina and as a woman, we have to sometimes work twice as hard to get the opportunity.”

And in one of the most thrilling parts of her speech, Jennifer urged anyone who wants to succeed, to do it in the face of their critics. “Sometimes my big dreams and my ambitions made the people around me nervous. People would say you're a dancer, you can't be an actress. The more they said I couldn't, the more I knew that I had to. So now here I stand, so very grateful, knowing that the true measure of my success is not in box office numbers or records sold, but from the love that I feel from all of you and – yes, I feel it."
