The River is in the running for an International Emmy

1Magic’s hit telenovela The River has been nominated for an International Emmy Award, and we are ululating with pride.

Our attention was snared last year by 1Magic’s homegrown drama The River. Perhaps it was the captivating characters and storyline: a greedy mining tycoon, a blood diamond, corrupt cops and a struggling township community. Or perhaps it’s the cast of upcoming and seasoned actors that makes us tune into 1Magic come 8 pm every night. All of this resonates with South Africans in one way or another, and if there’s something that 1Magic gets right, it’s telling stories that matter.

Obsessed with The River? Binge-watch from the beginning on Showmax.

It came as no surprise (okay, we were so surprised and delighted) when the Tshedza Pictures production was announced as a 2019 International Emmy Award nominee in the Best Telenovela category. Not to be confused with the Primetime Emmy Awards held on 22 September, the International Emmy Awards are bestowed in recognition of the best TV programmes initially produced and aired outside the US. The winners will be announced on 25 November at the prestigious World Television Festival in New York. Fingers and toes crossed that The River wins! Not to blow our own horn, but South Africa does have a tendency to come out shining when thrust onto the international stage.
