It takes courage for a celebrity to sit down with actress and host Pearl Thusi to share intimate details about their personal life and the struggles that they’ve faced in the entertainment industry on talkshow Behind The Story – and it’s no different in S4, which airs from Wednesday, 16 September on BET (DStv 129) at 22:00.
If you know anything about Pearl, it’s that she calls a spade a spade. From the minute the cameras start rolling, she’s swiping on the screen of her tablet and grilling the celebrity with tough questions. It’s enough to make the guest sweat a bit. But it’s an interview, not an attack.
The hot seat with Pearl
On the Behind The Story set, nothing is off the table – and Pearl and her celebrity guest spend the hour unveiling secrets and details about the celebrity’s life that were once hidden to their fans. Pearl consistently covers all the bases during the interview: their childhood, their love lives, and future projects. But she has clear lines that she won’t cross.
A standout moment on the talkshow took place in June 2019 when controversial musician Kelly Khumalo sat down with Pearl to discuss her 15-year career, which had been nothing short of scandalous. “That’s the thing about owning your truth, no one can ever use it against you,” Kelly told Pearl. It was a gift voucher for Pearl to pry as much as she’d like, and viewers were somewhat surprised when she didn’t cash it in in full.
“To expect me to ambush my guests or make them feel attacked by my line of questioning will never happen. To change their opinions or stories with my feelings or moral ethics/code is not what the show is about. This show is not a tabloid fest. I will not use this platform as a sensationalist platform to attack my black brothers and sisters and break them down. I'm celebrating them while I get to know and understand their story. It's their story, not mine, and my feelings come second," she explained in a Tweet that has since been taken down.
Now in S4, Pearl will be sharing the couch with the likes of reality TV star and entrepreneur Shauwn Mkhize, musician Sho Majozi, and athlete Caster Semenya.
In the spotlight
Behind The Story viewers can look forward to some unusual twists. While Pearl is used to being on the other side of the table asking questions, in S3 she was the one answering. For a special episode, Pearl invited her best friend, DJ Zinhle Jiyane, to discuss their friendship, motherhood and, of course, their very public break-ups.
The besties had the interview on a bed, in their gowns like a day at a spa. One of the highlights from their chat was when they revealed how they became friends. Basically, Pearl stalked Zinhle for months until the latter warmed up to the idea of them hanging out. Now they’re inseparable and are each other’s biggest cheerleaders. PS: If Pearl and Zinhle are Friendship Goals for you, give their interview on Dinner At Somizi’s (episode 8) a try!
Fans got to see Pearl in a new light, comfortable and unrestricted as she spoke about her future – something that she never does. “I’d like to continue working between South Africa and Africa at large, as well as the US and anywhere else,” explained Pearl. “I believe that the time is now to create my own stories. I’ve always been intimidated by the idea of starting my own stories and [acting on] them as I’m more comfortable in front of the camera. That’s next for me,” Pearl revealed.
