Cold and lonely? Light that braai fire! Jan Scannell, braai ambassador and Heritage Day enthusiast, is back with a milestone 10th season of the lifestyle show Jan Braai Vir Erfenis, and this time he’s looking back at highlights through the decade.

“I am extremely proud of the production team and all the hard work and effort they have put into this shows these past years,” says Jan, who would never have dreamt that he would make it to 10 seasons. “I remember traveling through South Africa in season 1 and thinking this will only be a once-off TV show, and now look where we are,” he says proudly.

Braai is ingrained in South African culture and Jan believes that it can reunite us even in these socially distanced times. Stoke your coals, scrub your grill, and tune into Jan Braai Vir Erfenis every Friday.

Looking back at highlights

S10 is jam-packed with 26 episodes in which Jan shares braai recipes and travels to various destinations locally and abroad. “We were fortunate not to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We safely concluded our travels outside our borders before we went into lockdown,” explains Jan.

In the first 10 episodes of S10, Jan will concentrate on highlights from the past 9 seasons (watch it on Showmax). He will create a new braai dish as a tribute to each season. “In the first episode (view it on Catch Up) we revisit my first interview with musician Johnny De Ridder from rock band Fokofpolisiekar. He helped compose our theme song for Jan Braai Vir Erfenis, and he told me he would like to know how to properly cook fish over a fire,” recalls Jan. “In honour of that, I made a delicious yellowtail fish dish over the coals.”

In the second episode (17 July), Jan looks back at his visit to Ireland in S2 during St. Patrick’s Day, and he makes an Irish-inspired braai burger with Irish mustard and soda bread. From episode 11 onwards, the show is on the road. Jan will make pit stops in the Karoo, SA’s coasts, Zimbabwe and Argentina.

Winter braai tips

With winter in full swing and most of us cooped up in our houses, Jan says it’s the perfect opportunity to braai and keep warm. “It saves you money when you braai because besides cooking meat and braaibroodjies (my favourite), you can also make a delicious potjies as well as soups and fondue with leftover cheese in your fridge that you melt in the potjie pot,” explains Jan. Other winter braai tips that Jan recommends include using wood rather than coals and briquettes for a braai. “In that way you stimulate the local economy if you go out and buy the wood.”

Unity in our land

The 24th of September is Heritage Day aka National Braai Day and Jan isn’t going to let lockdown and the pandemic keep him from celebrating and promoting unity in our country.

“The big promotional events my team and I have planned for that day have been cancelled, but the spirit of the day is not lost and I will continue to promote it on the show and in my personal capacity,” says Jan. “Families, friends and individuals can still braai on the day and share it with their friends and family on social media and live Whatsapp and Zoom calls.”

Jan is also planning on distributing a braai fun packet full of knickknacks, toys and streamers with Braai Day branding that people can use on the day. “Nothing will stop the spirit behind Heritage Day and as long as we can unite behind a fire and a tjoppie, nothing will stop us from growing and being happy.”
