Somgaga is back, and this season is all about wedding dreams.
Media personality and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo’s show shimmers into its fourth season this week, and you’d best start chilling the bubbly, because we hear wedding bells …
The dream is real
Of all the things fans adore about Somizi, his hustle is right up there at the top of the list. With decades of experience in the entertainment industry and a successful reality show Living the Dream with Somizi, Somgaga, as he’s affectionately known by his fans, is a legend indeed. The glamourous celeb has let us into his life, from his busy schedule to his devotion to his daughter and mother and the extended Mhlongo family in KZN.
Somizi’s career began on stage when he was just 13. As a member of the cast of Sarafina!, he travelled the world for five years, which is hardly surprising – he is after all a child of acting royalty. His mother is veteran actress Mary Mhlongo Twala, and she and Somizi both starred in the 1992 movie of Sarafina! alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Miriam Makeba. Somizi’s father was the legendary actor and comedian Ndaba Mhlongo, who also choreographed Sarafina.
All that talent came straight down in the genes, along with the singing, the acting, and oodles of personality. First and foremost a choreographer by profession, Somizi is quick to tell friends on his show that there’s a difference between dancing and choreography. Dancing is what anyone does at a party – any move is a dance, he says. Choreography, on the other hand, is something that very few people grasp. And boy, does Somizi understand it.
I do, I do, I do
He’s not one to be coy about his age (46! Can you believe it?), or shy away from the limelight when it comes to his personal life. When word hit the street that Somizi got engaged while on a trip to Paris, there were cheers all around. His fiancé, Mohale Motaung, is a model and actor on MTV series Shuga: Down South, and they’re easily one of the most stylish celebrity couples in SA.
It’s hard to get enough of Somizi’s charismatic, multi-talented personality. Whether as a singer, actor, or as the most glamorous red carpet host at every event in the South African entertainment calendar. And with the amount of success he’s garnered in the past couple of years, It's quite evident that everything Somizi touches shimmers.
Lucky for us, Mzansi Magic has ensured that we get more of that Somgaga spark on Idols SA season 15, where he once again joins co-judges Unathi and Randall in the quest to find SA’s next hottest talent. But the really juicy stuff will be reserved for fans of Living the Dream in the coming episodes as we get a front row seat into the planning stages of his upcoming nuptials. Lobola is quite the issue at this point, and Somizi wants to figure out the right way to do it, keeping in mind his Zulu tradition and his fiancé’s Sotho tradition.
