The second episode of this brand-new local drama sees President Lufuno Zandile Mulaudzi, (played by Florence Masebe) and her aide still being held captive after a riot broke out in the township. Former President Hendrik Mbuli is behind bars following his reign of corruption and state looting, but his tainted legacy seems to last forever, even during Mulaudzi’s tenure.
The Republic gives South Africa its first female president
New political drama series The Republic gets its hands dirty to clean up South African politics.
The Republic is a brand-new Mzansi Magic original series from the masterminds behind the wildly popular drama The River and it’s set to hit our screens on Sunday 7 July.
Set in an alternative universe in present-day South Africa, The Republic follows the country’s first female president, the brilliant President Lufuno Zandile Mulaudzi (played by Florence Masebe), who’s determined to fight corruption and turn the country around.
Written by the multiple award-winning duo who run Tshedza Pictures, Phathutshedzo Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon, the series is packed with top South African talent. Starting with Masebe as the president, The Republic also stars Warren Masemola, Masasa Mbangeni (who played the prosecutor during Lindiwe’s trial in The River), Seputla Sebogodi, Thuli Phongolo and Isibaya’s Siyabonga Twala.
As for the series itself, all the juicy details are still a tightly kept secret. What we do know is that when The Republic kicks off, the country is tense as everyone waits for the court’s verdict on corruption charges against the former president.
But what happens next? Cleaning up the country isn’t going to be an easy job. There’s sure to be plenty of intrigue, peril and above all, drama.
The Republic sounds like the series South Africans need right now – a tight political drama rooted in our own country. We cannot wait!
