Just in time for Easter, Jesus: His Life is HISTORY’s new four-part docudrama that offers viewers a glimpse into Jesus’ life, as seen through the eyes of those who knew him best – the people in his life. A skilful balance of scripted dramatisation combined with input from a diverse panel of religious experts and leaders ensures that His Life is a powerful retelling of “The Greatest Story Ever Told”.
It’s easy to forget that Jesus walked among us as a son, friend or even enemy. Through scripted dramatisation, his time on earth is shown from the perspectives of eight of the people closest to him: Joseph, Mary Mother of God, John the Baptist, Judas, Pontius Pilate, the disciple Peter, Caiaphas and Mary Magdalene. The human element brings an invaluable relatability to the narrative – we can imagine Joseph’s total disbelief when he finds out that not only is his fiancée pregnant, but she is also carrying the Son of God.
Balancing out the emotional content, the panel of theologians and religious experts provides insight and cultural context to help us understand many of the events and how they unfolded. For example, Joseph understood that he held Mary’s fate as an unmarried pregnant woman in his hands, for she would have faced death had he not stood by her, despite his doubts of her claims. The panel features prominent pastor and author Joel Osteen, as well as the charismatic Bishop Michael Curry – who delivered the sermon during the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
His Life could have been just another ambitious retelling of Jesus’ life story, but it proves to be a unique and invaluable portrayal of the humanity and grace that characterised His life on Earth.
Jesus: His Life is on Sundays on HISTORY (186) at 19:20.
