Empathy and enmity – a new documentary series examines hate-based violence

Discovery Channel’s pioneering new docu-series Why We Hate investigates why hate and conflict are so much a part of the human experience.

The six-part documentary series produced by Steven Spielberg and Alex Gibney examines how hate has shaped our history. Through interviews with journalists, historians and researchers in the fields of psychology, biology and neuroscience, the series aims to identify this vicious sentiment in our daily lives and what we can do to stop its effects from spreading.

“Getting to the root of the human condition is something I find not only fascinating but [also] absolutely necessary in understanding who we are. If we understand why we act the way we do, we can change the way we act,” says Spielberg.

Great news! From 11 October to 17 November, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact customers will be able to watch the Discovery Channel (121). Add a reminder for Why We Hate.

Through instances of extreme violence throughout our world history, hate has been at the core of countless conflicts, and through exploring events such as the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide and apartheid the series aims to get to the root of this destructive force.

Why We Hate premieres on Sunday 13 October on Discovery Channel (121) at 22:00
