The Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning dramedy returns for a second season of resilient friendships, fragile marriages, elite school politics and a community both plagued and held together by all those big and little lies. Meryl Streep joins the all-star cast of characters reeling from a life-altering event in the idyllic coastal town of Monterey.

Beautiful liars: the amazing women of Big Little Lies

Season two of Big Little Lies promises so much more of our favourite characters, and the casting coup of the year with the addition of legendary Hollywood A-lister.

What’s better than the Monterey Five? The Monterey Five plus Meryl Streep, of course! It’s not a joke. It’s just what happens when you take the most formidable all-female lead cast in television … and make it even better for season two.

Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman)

Former lawyer, wife of the late Perry Wright, and mother to twins Max and Josh, Celeste’s terrible secret – that she was in a brutally abusive marriage – is finally out in the open, but now she and the others have to hide the secret of exactly how Perry died.

“He will not hurt the children. He will never hurt the children … It’s alright. I’m fine.” – Celeste

Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon)

Tightly-wound community theatre producer and mother to Abigail (by ex-husband Nathan ) and Chloe (by husband Ed), Madeline is unfailingly loyal to her friends, if not to her husband. Can she live with the secret of her affair with Joseph, or will she break down and tell Ed?

“I think maybe sometimes I’m just holding on to this idea of perfection so tight, something has to give.” – Madeline

Renata Klein (Laura Dern)

CEO Renata is fiercely protective of her daughter Amabella, her marriage to husband Gordon and her undisputed status as the very last person in Monterey you’d want to mess with. Now that Amabella’s secret about who was hurting her at school (Celeste’s son Max, not Ziggy!) has been revealed, Renata can afford to be a bit nicer to people like Jane. We hope.

“You're dead in this town." – Renata

Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley)

Freelance book-keeper, rape survivor and single mother to Ziggy, Monterey newcomer Jane had no idea that all the time she was searching for her attacker, the devil was right in her backyard (and married to her friend Celeste). Now that he’s a) been exposed, and b) dead, she can hopefully start healing and rebuilding her life with her son (who we now know is half-brother to Celeste’s sons).

“You’re not perfect. Welcome to the club.” – Jane Chapman

Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz)

She’s young and beautiful, a super zen yoga-instructor, wife to Madeline’s dishy ex, Nathan, mother to his daughter Skye and ultra-cool step-mom to his teen daughter Abigail. From the outside, her life seems perfect (except for the little secret about having pushed Perry to his death), but there are demons in Bonnie’s past …

"None of us really see things as they are, we see things as we are." – Bonnie Carlson

Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep)

Perry’s grieving mother has moved to Monterey to help look after her grandsons Max and Josh. Reserved and soft-spoken, there is a shrewdness and a sense of restrained volatility to her personality that could make living with her (and her questions), shall we say … uncomfortable.

“I want to know what happened that night.” – Mary Louise
