When a recently widowed almost-70-year-old family matriarch announces she’s fallen for a new man, the lives of her three children are thrown into turmoil. A tale of secrets, lies, rivalries and betrayals – and a possible murder – the four-part series Flesh And Blood is set on the Sussex coast and comes to iTV Choice (DStv 123) this April.
Francesca Annis (Home Fires) plays the glamorous Vivien, opposite her love interest, retired surgeon Mark (Stephen Rea, The Crying Game, War & Peace), who soon begins to coax her priorities away from her family. This makes the siblings Jake (Russell Tovey, Years and Years), Helen (Claudie Blakley, Manhunt) and Natalie (Lydia Leonard, Gentleman Jack) uneasy, in part because the family home and their inheritance suddenly don’t seem so assured.
Mark’s arrival also calls into question Vivian’s apparently happy 45-year marriage to their father Terry, as well as their precious childhood memories. He left the family well-off so we have to wonder about Mark’s motives. Doctors do know a thing or two about killing people…
Then there’s the unglamorous neighbour Mary (played by the biggest name in the cast, Imelda Staunton), who has lived next door for almost the entire time and appears to have a rather unhealthy interest in the family’s drama. Some might even say she’s a bit of a mad stalker.
Flesh And Blood flings the viewer right into the middle of the action - a broken balcony railing, a bloodstained rock below, police, flashing lights and a body being loaded into an ambulance. Mary is giving her version of events to the cops but some details don’t add up.
From there, the story cuts between past and present as unsavoury details about each character are revealed, adding resentment, envy, emotional turmoil, potential nemeses and suspicions to this simmering pot of intrigue and mystery.
Flesh & Blood premieres on iTV Choice (DStv 123) on Monday, April 13 at 20:00.
