An army veteran turned PI investigates crime in Stumptown

It may be fictional, but M-Net’s new series is a cautionary tale about the struggles soldiers face once they return from war and how to navigate their new surroundings.

The Plot

Portland, Oregon, is home to Dex Parios, a military veteran who’s now hung up the uniform and uses her sharp investigative and evasion skills for a somewhat noble vocation — Stumptown’s only private investigator. After being in the frontlines during six combat tours in Afghanistan, Dex is silently battling PTSD. Add in gambling, taking care of her younger brother, and the merciless ghosts haunting her dreams, you get one frazzled gal.

The term Stumptown is a nickname for Portland - and like all towns, a good bar almost serves as the headquarters for all the people to converge and share gossip, conspiracy theories, and receive unsolicited advice from the barman.

The main players

We fell in love with Cobie Smulders in the comedy How I Met Your Mother where she played Robin, a fiercely proud Canadian in a group of friends who shared romances, the toils of life and the sheer vanities of adulting. That was four years ago, and even though she’s no stranger to the big and small screen (she’s also Maria Hill in the Avengers franchise), playing a bisexual private investigator with no shortage of baggage has got to be daunting.

Based on the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka, Dex defies the usual female victim role in crime dramas – she’s actually the one investigating crime. Helping Dex with her cases is detective Miles Hoffman played by Michael Ealy (Being Mary Jane, The Intruder). Jake Johnson from the comedy series New Girl plays the ever-loyal bar owner, Greg McConnell, who’s always ready with a helping hand.

Stumptown S1 starts on Tuesday 26 November on M-Net (101) at 20:00
