Season three of The Handmaid's Tale takes us into the dark heart of Gilead as Offred prepares to fight for her child … and her freedom.

This intense dystopian drama is set in an alternate reality in which the Land of the Free has been replaced by Gilead, a brutal religious fundamentalist regime in which women are the property of the State. With infertility a global problem, June is one of the few women who can still conceive. In this dystopian future, women are forced into slavery as handmaids, given to senior government officials to bear their children.

Season two kicked into high gear in the finale when the Marthas suddenly give June – now called Offred – the chance to escape with her baby. The episode was an emotional rollercoaster fraught with danger, defiance and sacrifice. In the end, with freedom so close, June couldn’t leave without Hannah, the daughter that was taken from her when she was captured. Now the might of Gilead stands between June and her daughter. To get her back and find freedom, she may have to bring down the whole system.

Blessed be the fight

"She's ready to rise up … ready to take some chances and use all the skills she's learned over the last three years," showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter, saying that June is “ready to fight”.

The season three teasers have so far promised at least two new characters (look out for Christopher Meloni), and a surprise face that you may have very mixed feelings about seeing again. We’ll get to see what Washington DC looks like in the world of Gilead, and follow June into the heart of darkness as she joins the resistance.

The Handmaid's Tale is edge-of-your-seat political drama at its best, and absolutely unmissable in the current global climate. At once compelling and frightening, this award-winning social science-fiction series is based on the classic Margaret Atwood novel that won the Arthur C. Clarke award, and stars Golden Globe winner Elisabeth Moss as Offred.
