In Second Act, the evergreen Jennifer Lopez plays Maya, a New York department store worker who knows her ideas could take the store to a whole new level. The problem is, she doesn’t have a college degree, so none of the suits will take her seriously.

To help her, her friend’s son fakes her CV – and sends it to a massive beauty corporation, which hires her on the spot. But not everyone believes her story, and she soon finds herself in a face-off with Zoe (played by Vanessa Hudgens), a younger, equally ambitious exec. It’s all about girl power – women doing it for themselves in the workplace, a bit like Working Girl and the classic 9 to 5.

Here’s some more reasons to get your girlfriends together and indulge in this inspiring movie:

  • If you loved Maid in Manhattan, Jennifer’s other rags-to-riches movie, you’ll love Second Act. Jennifer has a special way of transforming downtrodden characters into glowing success stories. You can also stream more JLo magic in Gigli and What To Expect When You’re Expecting online.
  • It’s all about female friendship. Leah Remini plays Maya’s confident, loud friend Joan, whose son lands Maya the job in the first place. The tender, supportive bond between Joan and Maya is enough to make this a must-watch for girlfriends everywhere. The two actresses are also best friends in real life.
  • Maya’s love interest is played by Milo Ventimiglia (from This is Us). Jennifer cast him in the role herself, saying his New York heritage made him perfect for the part.
  • Jennifer believes the reason she connected so well with the role of Maya is because it mirrors her own story in the way. She grew up in the Bronx, didn’t have much of an education and had to find her way into showbiz all by herself – on guts and gumption.
