Let the games begin!

Anele Mdoda, Jason Goliath and Ayanda Thabethe are your hosts for Celebrity Game Night.

If you’re obsessed with NBC’s Celebrity Game Night with Jane Lynch – celebs acting silly in hilarious challenges; what’s not to like! – then get ready for brand-new episodes of the South African edition, hosted by Anele Mdoda, and airing on E! Entertainment (DStv 124).

Joining her as team captains are comedian Jason Goliath and the gorgeous Ayanda Thabethe (Top Billing). Together, they’re bringing buckets of laughs as they gather with a group of your favourite celebrities for an evening of raucous entertainment.

How do the games work?

In each episode, two teams of celebrity guests face off as they play outrageous party games that test pop culture knowledge, acting skills and nerves of steel.

As host, Mdoda will guide well-known African celebrities over the course of each episode, alongside team captains Goliath and Thabethe, to ensure the game night is filled with fun and frolics.

A conversation with the queen

We had some questions for the Celebrity Game Night question boss herself, Anele Mdoda

Sundays are fun days again! Celebrity Game Night is back on E! (124) for five fabulous weeks from Sunday, 19 April at 21:00. “I can’t wait to take the games to the next level, with more celebrities and even more laughs, you’re guaranteed to be left in stitches!” says cheeky show host Anele Mdoda. And with the E! channel available on DStv Compact from Tuesday 14 April, so many more of us will be tuning in to watch Anele’s celebrity friends make fools of themselves under the guidance of team captains Jason Goliath and Ayanda Thabethe!

Please welcome to the couch

The new celebrities joining the show to take on Anele’s challenges include Lerato Kganyago, Dineo Langa, Nadia Nakai, Marc Lottering, J’Something, Danny K and even celebrity fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee. And if you were impressed by the competitive spirit of Ice Prince and Minnie Dlamini Jones in the first part of S1, the good news is that they will be back for more. Anele will be challenging them to play ridiculous party games and testing their knowledge of entertainment facts, celebrities, songs and more. The stakes are low, but the thirst for praise is high. You haven’t seen competitive spirit until you’ve seen one of our local celebs throw themselves on the floor or slide off a couch like a sad, sad slinky just because they couldn’t guess which famous person’s nose was in a photo. And there isn’t even a prize at stake!

Anele’s house, Anele’s rules, our questions

We asked busy Anele some rapid-fire questions – and she answered them all before we could hit the buzzer and shower her in confetti:

Which game took the longest to film and why?

Popped Quiz – it requires all 14 cameras because we cannot miss a moment. We use loads of popcorn, which gets blasted at you at outrageous speeds if you get an answer wrong. And if you get it right, the person sitting opposite you gets it (in the face). So you can imagine the time it takes, and the fact that we are eating the popcorn between takes does not make it easier for the "Anele has popcorn in her teeth department".

Which one of the celebs was a stranger to you before the show, but made you want to be BFFs?

Mishqah Parthiephal (from the Keeping Up With The Kandasamys movie) is the only celeb I had not met before and she is a hoot and a scoot!

Who do you reckon is the most ruthless, competitive celeb who’s been on the show?

Minnie Dlamini Jones. Wow, sis! She will cut her family, that one :)

Some of the celebs are incredibly quick with their answers. Who really surprised you?

Zola Nene, our favourite chef, was so incredibly sharp and very clued up on pop culture and she has an amazing story to tell, which she shared between games.

Which of the games is the real nail-biter for you and why?

The one that is a variation of musical chairs, it gets physical, I think Lerato Kganyago even took her shoes off! MY GURL. The game is called Couch Potato.

Have you arrived in your dressing room or back home to find confetti in strange places?

Yes!!! Popcorn in my bra…

Which of the games or quiz categories would be the real challenge for Anele?

Some of the decider games in Smash The Buzzer had even me blocked, which is terrible because Smash The Buzzer is usually worth a lot of points since it is the decider.

And now you’re on the couch as a team captain. It’s time to set up your ultimate dream team to crush it. Who’s there with you?

Mojak Lehoko, Minnie Dlamini Jones, Mpho Popps. No one stands a chance against us.

Celebrity Game Night aside, what are a few of your favourite TV gameshows?

Small Talk, Telly Fun Quiz and Come Dine With Me… that’s a gameshow, right? (Anele, you know it. They’re all wanting to come out on top!)

What game couldn’t you get people to play with you as a child and why?

I do not have one but I can tell you now, I suck at Monopoly.

Luckily from the looks of the dazzling celebrity line-up this season, though, everybody wants to play Celebrity Game night.
