First Dates South Africa enchants on DStv

This October, BBC Lifestyle hosts the brand-new South African version of First Dates on DStv. South African singletons looking for love will have the opportunity to meet their match in the camera-rigged First Dates restaurant, where trained staff will help to make the blind dates go as smoothly as possible. Viewers get to watch every juicy detail, including the awkward first greeting and drinks at the bar, dinnertime interrogations and revelations. And when it’s over, it’s off to the First Dates booth, where the duo will pronounce their romance a hit or a miss.

The First Dates pop-up restaurant in Greenside, Johannesburg, welcomes 120 singles through its doors. Ready to meet them is the cool, calm and collected maitre d’ Batsile, charming bartender Travis and hilarious waiting trio Ash, Joey and Tamara. About 30 discreetly rigged cameras catch every intimate and awkward moment – it’s the biggest fixed-rig set ever built in South Africa.

And if you’re feeling cynical, wondering if sparks will actually fly, true love has blossomed in the show format overseas. Like Lauren and Dan, who met on the UK series in 2013 and are expecting their second child. And Hema and Ajai, who dated in 2016 and tied the knot last year.

“We love the authenticity of the First Dates format,” says executive producer Ed Worster. “Our job is to find the perfect match for each of our daters, and we hope true love might follow their first encounter.”

The aim of the game is for the couples to see if there’s any chemistry between them. And the producers promise they’ve looked for big characters, novice daters, the players, the beautiful, the quirky, the young and the old. Watch all the first-date jitters on DStv.
