This Friday 9 August, 16 remarkable and inspiring South African ladies will compete for the country’s ultimate pageant title – Miss South Africa 2019. The spectacular event will once again be hosted at Sun Arena at Time Square Casino in Pretoria, and will be broadcast live on Mzansi Magic (161) and M-Net (101) from 17:00. The winner will take home over R3 million in prizes.
A rainbow of diversity
The event promises to be a truly empowering celebration. Boasting arguably the most diverse line-up of contestants in the pageant’s history, the organisers are confident that they’ve turned the conventional concept of the pageant on its head and brought it into the 21st century.
“We’ve redefined the traditional, narrow parameters of beauty and embraced diversity, celebrating beautiful South African women,” said Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss SA organisation. This year’s finalists represent women of different shapes, colours, and sizes, including ladies who are challenging the “skinny model” stereotype, a model with a prominent facial birthmark, and a hearing-impaired contestant. The line-up of stunning hopefuls also includes the first ever openly gay contestant, a truly momentous step for the LGBTQ community.
The finalists bring a wide range of passions and platforms to this year’s pageant, from literacy to body positivity, mental health to the environment and education in disadvantaged communities. The night will also see the Miss South Africa organisation name the recipient of the 'Mother of the Nation' award for women dedicated to community-building, and the 'Young Activist' award for future leaders.
A star-studded line-up
Celebrated local media personality Bonang Matheba returns as the host of the illustrious pageant, supported on stage by Liesl Laurie and Zavion Kotze. TV personality Enhle Mbali will be manning the red carpet to report on all the must-see fashion as the stars and high-profile guests make their way up the red carpet in the build-up to the evening’s event. The prominent and respected all-female judging panel includes reigning Miss Universe Catriona Gray from the Phillipines and her predecessor, former Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. There’s also presenter and radio personality Anele Mdoda, actress and businesswoman Connie Ferguson and SA model, activist and lawyer Thando Hopa.
The stellar entertainment programme this year includes performances by platinum-selling artist Jesse Clegg, star rapper Sho Madjozi, singer-songwriter Amanda Black and rapper Nasty C, along with his protégé and up-and-coming songbird Rowlene.
