Reality meets renovation

The Block Australia is back with new teams, a new building in need of some TLC and a new(ish) foreman.

If you can’t get enough of Australian reality TV, you’re going to love The Block! This renovation show has teams of two compete against each other to turn hideous buildings into head-turning works of art. Once the job is complete, the building will be sold to the highest bidder.

Along for the build, paint, and sell job and supporting the teams (called Blockheads) is award-winning host Scott Cam and his co-host, Shelley Craft. Judging the teams are Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, while Keith Schleiger returns as foreman. But he’s not alone… season 10 saw former contestant Dan Reilly join Keith as his understudy and now Dan is back – as a qualified foreman!

Why you should watch The Block Australia S11

If you are cringing at the thought of Dan the “foreboy” returning, don’t let that put you off – this season’s building has a surprise or two! Australian design website Interiors Addict reports that Dan is aware he struggled with the transition from contestant to judge, but that he’s feeling a whole lot more confident this time around.

But a transformed Dan isn’t the only reason to tune in this season. Season 11 has been dubbed “The Block: Blocktagon” because the structure they’ll be making over is an octagonal brick building – and it’s got a dark past. Hotel Saville in South Yarra, Melbourne, is the same place a man claiming to be a vampire attacked a young woman in 2002. A year later, he was murdered while the trial was underway. Estate agents have a duty to reveal a property’s controversial history, but we wonder if anyone shared that disturbing detail with the Blockheads?

Meet the contestants

Speaking of the Blockheads – they’re another reason this season promises to stand out. They’ve got the passion and the vision, but whether they’re able to bring their concepts to life… well, that remains to be seen.

The teams include two married couples: Kingi and Caro Tahana (a renderer and a business development manager) and Dean and Shay Paine (an electrician and an English/drama teacher). They’ll be up against Andrew Simmons and Whitney Nolan (a farm worker and a beauty therapist), as well as single moms and best friends Suzi Taylor and Voni Cosier (a real estate agent and a fitness studio manager). The final pair promises to be the ones to watch: brother and sister duo Luke and Ebony Haythornthwaite, a carpenter/landscaper and an interior designer.

See the Blockheads out renovate each other in The Block Australia S11 on Tuesday 29 October on M-Net (101) at 18:00.
