Rob Lowe stars in two brand-new shows coming soon to DStv

We’re bringing in the big guns – the 80’s heartthrob and US drama star is set to appear in two all-new series coming to DStv, and we’ve rounded up all the details.

From his breakout role in the iconic 80s cult classic St Elmo’s Fire and gracing the cover of every teen magazine imaginable, to roles in long-running top series like The West Wing and Parks and Recreation, the 55-year-old actor is one of the hardest-working Hollywood A-listers. His most recent roles have taken on a distinctly wild west theme, in actual location as well as in overall theme.

Wild Bill

In this offbeat new police dramedy, Lowe’s Texan accented police chief Bill Hixon relocates from Miami to the town of Boston in the UK’s East Lincolnshire to take over the largely unimpressed local constabulary. When it comes to solving crimes, Bill loves numbers, algorithms – logic! This immediately puts him at odds with the deep-rooted traditional methods that the local coppers have ingrained in them – despite the area’s alarming rising murder rate. The show is deeply unorthodox but completely funny – with a dark humour that the British have such a natural affinity for.

"I've been doing this a long time, and it becomes harder and harder to get people's attention, and to raise their eyebrows. Wild Bill is a totally unnatural fit, by design, and that's what drew me to it when I first read the script." Rob Lowe

It’s not all bonkers fun and chasing Russian mobsters through cabbage fields though. The show exhibits some surprising sincerity when it touches on Bill’s fragile relationship with his sarcastic and sassy teenage daughter, and more specifically the heart wrenching motivation behind their relocation to the UK. And at its heart it’s still a crime procedural, but the culprits will always be more than just a little different from what you’d expect. Set to some of the best Western-styled music, there’s bad blood in Boston, and Wild Bill’s the man to clean up the streets.

9-1-1: Lone Star

When it came to casting the perfect leading man for their Texas-based spin-off of their hit first responders drama 9-1-1, producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk were thrilled to be able to cast “the incomparable” Rob Lowe. He stars as urbane New York City firefighter Owen Strand who moves with his son to the city of Austin in the Lone Star State of Texas. The show is set to follow Owen's personal struggles as a single father raising a teenage son in a new city, and the balancing it requires to also juggle his high-stress job in the emergency services.

Also set to join the cast is another Hollywood heavy hitter, Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings, The Leftovers), cast opposite Lowe as chief paramedic Michelle Blake. Described as “brilliant and wry”, she has a knack for bringing out the best (and worst) in the latest addition the Austin fire station.

Wild Bill comes to M-Net (101) early next year, and 9-1-1: Lone Star also comes to M-Net (101) in January 2020. Keep checking for updates on the final scheduling.
